In 1994 I happened to make drawings of the only indigenous tree growing in the Botanical gardens in Edinburgh; an old Wych Elm. This drawing went on to become the ‘tree of life’ motif  for a public art work collaboration with the Slide
Workshop and Lux Europa project, working with 200 children to make an Illuminated window design over 80 windows of a council building in Edinburgh. The drawing was resurrected following the death of the tree from Dutch Elm
Disease  in 2004, and used as the basis for this limited edition print made in collaboration with Graal Press.

This etching is based on a self-seeded offspring of the original elm, which was found growing quietly amongst the bamboo of the Chinese hillside garden in November. The seedling has since been destroyed. Available for sale - contact Kate Downie.
